Destination overview
High French skiing with room to roam.
La Plagne is one of our favourite French mega-resorts. On its own it offers around 225 km of pistes; the link with Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry opens up the 425 km Paradiski domain. Much of the skiing sits high above the valley, giving the area useful late-season options and far-reaching views of Mont Blanc and neighbouring peaks.
The resort's purpose-built villages are practical rather than picturesque. For a more traditional Alpine base, consider Champagny-en-Vanoise or Les Coches. The right village matters: La Plagne is spread across several sectors, and a poor base choice can mean longer journeys to the terrain you want.
Families and mixed-ability groups have long, approachable runs, while stronger skiers can seek out steeper pistes and guided off-piste routes. Some of the best freeride lines take several lifts or a traverse to reach; that extra effort can leave snow untracked longer after a storm. Conditions and avalanche safety still determine what is possible. After skiing, the food is part of the pleasure—Le Cairn in Champagny-en-Vanoise remains a personal favourite for a burger.
